In 2010, I began working at the Westfield Topanga mall playing piano in the center court every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Shortly thereafter, I noticed a young boy showing up to listen to me play nearly every shift. The first thing that comes to mind when I think about Mason is that he is the happiest and most radiant being I have ever met. The smile on his face speaks volumes about who he is and his spirit within him. Another thing about Mason is that he was born with cerebral palsy and because of this, he gets around via a wheelchair and his primary form of communicating words is through his computerized device called an “eco.” However, despite these challenges, Mason consistently radiates love and happiness to the highest degree I’ve ever seen in any human being
In the beginning, we didn’t talk much because Mason was very shy. We gradually began to build a very strong connection through music. Over time I learned that he has been a huge fan of classical music all his life and the piano is his favorite instrument. He had taken a real liking to my music – in particular my original compositions.
I found out that Mason’s 15th birthday was coming up and I wanted to do something special for him to show how much I appreciated his support and enthusiasm for my music and also to communicate how he had touched and inspired me personally. I decided that for his birthday, the best gift I could give him would be to write a song especially for him. Beyond what words can describe, the music tells a story of innocence, discovery, adversity, determination, acceptance, love and triumph! On November 19, 2010, I surprised Mason at the mall by playing “The Divine Within” for him for the first time on his birthday. As you might expect, his face lit up with the biggest smile you’ve ever seen!
As a part of his gift, I told Mason I wanted to donate 50% of the proceeds from the song to the charity of his choice. Mason chose WHEELS FOR HUMANITY which is a wonderful organization that provides wheelchairs to people in need all around the world! Three years later, we have raised over $600 through sales of the single! Now that “The Divine Within” is on this full length album, we will be donating $1 from every sale to WFH.
