about

Olivera was a very significant girlfriend in my life, and we are still friends to this day. We dated for nearly two years starting while at UCSB together and continued long distance after I graduated. While studying 20th century music in college, I was fascinated by the hidden mathematical codes that some composers insert into their compositions; often unbeknownst to the general audience. As part of an assignment, I decided to come up with something meaningful to say, then assign a different note to each letter in a phrase of my choice and create a good sounding melody from it. Seemed simple enough. But, the challenge I faced was if I used more than 7 or 8 different letters in my phrase then there would be too many notes creating an unstable melody because it would reach beyond a standard 7 note scale. So I had to make sure that my phrase would have some repeating letters in order to have repeating notes, thus more stability. I soon realized something I had said many times, “I Love You, Olivera” was a perfect candidate with the repeating O’s, L’s, E’s, I’s, and V’s. I could surely write a melody that spelled this out. The phrase actually has 9 different letters, so it was going to be tricky, but not impossible. I managed to work out a romantic melody that I was happy with and impress my music teachers at the same time!

The main theme can be heard after the introduction as:
“I - L - O - V - E - Y - O - U - O - L - I - V - E - R - A,”

using the notes:
“C - Bb - Ab - Eb - D - F - Ab - G - Ab - Bb - C - Eb - D - A - B,” respectively.
